Starfruit Cosmic Refresher

Starfruit are growing in popularity and becoming more readily available. Starfruit grow in hot, tropical climates on small evergreen bushes. When the fruit are mature, they are light green to yellow and have a waxy surface with oddly pointed sides. When the fruit are cut crossways, the slices are star shaped, hence the name. Starfruit can range from mildly sweet to intensely bitter. They are very low in calories and contain an impressive amount of nutrients.

Starfruit is very high in vitamin C, which can help the body fight off infections and reduce inflammation in the body. Starfruit is high in B vitamins such as riboflavin, vitamin B6, and folates. These vitamins can be helpful in regulating metabolism. Electrolytes and minerals such as potassium, iron, zinc, and phosphorus are also found in starfruit. These components can help to control heart rate and blood pressure and can also be helpful in eliminating cramps and maintaining proper circulation.

Oxalic Acid Content Warning

Starfruit is very healthy for most healthy people, but may be dangerous for people with impaired kidney function. Eating excessive quantities of starfruit and other foods containing oxalic acid may interfere with the body’s absorption of minerals such as calcium and magnesium and may predispose some people to kidney stones. Starfruit may also interact adversely with certain drugs in the same way as grapefruit. If there are any health concerns about eating starfruit, you should consult a doctor before trying the fruit.
